The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Horror Merging Survival Horror with Social Deduction Gameplay

The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.

"This is a distinctive game where a young woman containing several human souls inside her must escape from a maze of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Fractured Mind

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of high school age. Within her exist four distinct souls, all possessing unique fears and drives. These souls can seize control at will, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.

Judging by showcased footage, much of the action unfolds within a creepy hospital, though additional clips show the protagonist navigating a abandoned chapel.

A World of Personal Horror

"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to others can trigger something primal inside us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are unique to every individual."

The central mechanic involves managing the persona that emerges at a particular time. However, these identities will switch involuntarily as you play. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become amplified and attack the protagonist one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Choice

Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by nurses who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the lobby have large blooms where their necks should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "All four souls asserts that the body belongs to them," notes a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."

After a player believes a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, because every entity can lie or hide the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.

"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The final entity remaining might be a fraud. In any case, your choices are final."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is can be follow on platforms.
