Seattle's LGBTQ+ Pride to Proceed During FIFA Tournament In Spite of Objections from Iran and Egypt

Arrangements to hold Pride-focused celebrations in Seattle during next summer’s FIFA World Cup tournament will continue unabated, despite the Egyptian and Iranian football federations raised strong concerns about a scheduled “Pride Match.”

Stadium Policy and External Festivities

Local organizers have confirmed they are “proceeding as planned” with celebratory programming in the city center. This coincides with the tournament group match featuring Egypt and Iran on 26 June. Furthermore, FIFA will permit Pride flags to be brought into the match venue.

“In our role as hosts, SeattleFWC26’s role is to prepare our city to host the matches and oversee the city experience outside of Seattle Stadium,” said a committee representative.

Legal Background Behind the Objections

Same-sex relations are criminalized under Iranian law, and in Egypt, public decency statutes are often used to target and prosecute LGBTQ+ people. Egypt's football association stated it did not want to be associated with celebrations that “directly contradict the social, religious and cultural values … in Islamic and Arab societies.” In a parallel move, the head of Iran's soccer body publicly registered “objections against the issue.”

The Governing Body's Position Regarding Flags and Banners

The international federation holds full authority of stadiums on matchdays. Although it prohibits banners and flags with overtly political content, it allows flags expressing “social and sporting symbols,” a category which includes the Pride flag. This policy was applied at the previous tournament in Qatar and was reaffirmed following reports of flags being seized.

  • The Pride Match was an idea created to showcase the city's longstanding tradition of advocating for equality.
  • A design contest is underway to produce artwork celebrating the event.
  • Organizers are committed to ensuring every visitor feel welcome in the city throughout the 48-team competition.

The region hosts one of the nation’s most prominent Iranian-American communities, a thriving Egyptian diaspora, and diverse populations representing all nations. “Our commitment is to guaranteeing everyone encounter the warmth, respect and dignity that characterizes our region,” organizers concluded.
