No less than 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio de Janeiro's Most Extensive Security Action on Gangs
At least 64 people were killed in a police operation cracking down on the Red Command gang in Rio de Janeiro's north zone - the most extensive and fatal action in the Brazilian state's past.
Four security agents were included in the fatalities during Operation Containment in the communities of Alemão and Penha, local authorities reported. In excess of 80 individuals were detained.
Fierce clashes erupted when approximately 2,500 police forces entered the area on Tuesday morning. The Comando Vermelho countered with armed resistance, setting fire to barriers and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, authorities said.
The United Nations human rights body said it was "appalled" by the security action, demanding "swift and comprehensive examinations".
Raid Aftermath
The slum neighborhoods close to Rio's airport is considered to be the central command of among the nation's strongest organised crime groups.
Local authorities stated no less than 50 of the fatalities were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".
Dozens of people were injured, including non-combatants affected by the violence.
Resident Accounts
Community members have described the mountainous region - home to about 300,000 people - to a "war zone" since the mission commenced.
Roads remain closed across the area.
Criminal Expansion
The Comando Vermelho organization has been increasing their influence in the area, expanding narcotics distribution networks and control of the hillside favelas.
Local law enforcement stated more than 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were captured in the mission, together with multiple guns.
Raid Preparation
The combined action by civil and military police comes after a twelve-month inquiry.
Many of the individuals are thought to be affiliates of a group from the northern region who are currently hiding in the metropolitan area.
