Milei Statuette, Anyone? Meloni to Sell International Gifts for Charity

Relinquishing undesired presents can be considered somewhat rude – unless it's done the right way.

A Charitable Sale

Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell around 270 presents received by her by international figures during her travels. This unusual assortment is said to contain gifts including a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gold heels.

The presents, collectively, are valued at around €800,000. They are scheduled to be sold in a public auction by a Rome-based auction firm. An exact timeline is yet to be set, although the aim is to hold the auction during the holiday season, with the proceeds benefiting non-profit organizations.

Storage Room Collection

The items reportedly stored in a storage room on the third floor of Palazzo Chigi. Sources state that Meloni is also considering auction off gifts received by her predecessors that have been stored away indefinitely.

The detailed catalog is yet to be disclosed, but partial details were revealed earlier this year when a detailed register of official presents was presented in parliament. The query centered on if a statutory cap on gift value was being respected. By law, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents valued above €300.

An International Array of Gifts

The collection includes:

  • A silk accessory from the leader of Albania, reportedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A traditional Kerala dress from India's prime minister.
  • A set of adornments from the Slovakian president.
  • A porcelain tea set and six bottles of wine from the Hungarian prime minister.
  • A ceramic bowl from the ex-American leader.
  • A digital device from the Ukrainian president.
  • Paintings from the Moldovan government.
  • An assortment including makeup, a skateboard, and several rugs received during trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Possibly the most unusual gifts were the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," one might note.

Political Backdrop

The prime minister has received praise, mostly from within her party, with winning over foreign leaders and re-establishing Italy as a key protagonist on the global scene once again.

This charitable initiative highlights a distinct method to manage the protocol gifts that are collected during a leader's tenure.
