Eurovision Was Once a Whimsical Delight – However It Has Transformed Into a Strategic Method to Whitewash War.

A recent acronym came to light a couple of months into the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Referred to as WCNSF, it means “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This term is unique to Gaza, per insights from medical experts including child health specialists. Normally, it is rare for medical staff to care for a young patient who has been bereaved of their entire family. But, there has been no semblance of normality concerning the widespread destruction in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been obliterated and the number of child amputees exceeds that of any other place in the world. No sense of normalcy in numerous doctors returning from a devastated terrain with accounts of children being systematically aimed at.

A Living Nightmare Regardless of a Reported Truce

Conditions in Gaza persist as hell on earth. Vital medicines and equipment are being blocked those in need, and international watchdogs have stated that atrocities are continuing. Authorities has denied these claims, consistent with how it refutes all charges it is charged with. Meanwhile, while traumatised orphans are now freezing in temporary shelters, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from continuing with its professed goal of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” The contest will continue to extend a prestigious stage for Israel, even though several European countries have now boycotted in dissent. And this, it seems, is what international harmony looks like.

Historically, Eurovision excluded Russia from competing in 2022 because of the “grave situation in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza seems completely different.

A Double Standard

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was accused of irregular participation methods last year in what seems to have been an attempt to inject politics into Eurovision. Set aside the news that a young child was reportedly killed in Gaza recently. Neglect the data that attacks by settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have escalated. Overlook the situation that foreign reporters are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. This entire context, evidently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Amidst Staggering Tragedy

The contest marks seven decades next year – almost double the current lifespan of a person in Gaza at present. The broadcast will air, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the camp joy it was formerly known for. An institution that once promoted harmony has now become a transparent instrument to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
