California's Governor States He Is Evaluating a Presidential Campaign for 2028
Gavin Newsom, a well-known member of the Democratic party, has indicated that he plans to determine whether to seek the White House in 2028 once the 2026 elections conclude.
"Yeah, I couldn't be truthful if I said no," Newsom commented when questioned about giving serious thought to a campaign for president after the 2026 elections. "That wouldn't be honest. And I won't do that."
Newsom's tenure as California's leader ends in the start of 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. However, he noted that any choice is a long way off.
"It's up to destiny," he said.
Increased Visibility as a Administration Opponent
The California governor has stepped forward as a prominent adversary of the current federal leadership, employing his online platforms and pushing a initiative that would boost Democratic congressional seats in as a counter to redistricting by Republicans. This strategy has made him a target from critics.
Clash on Transportation
The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, alleged that the governor does not care about Californians in a weekend interview on a major news network. The secretary disclosed plans to withhold taxpayer dollars from the state and warned revoking the power to issue commercial driver's licenses.
"I'm about to pull a significant sum from the state," he declared, after a recently reported tragic collision in California involving an unauthorized semi truck driver that resulted in three deaths and four injuries.
Newsom's office highlighted that the federal government had approved the individual's authorization repeatedly, which permitted him to secure a CDL under national regulations.
The transportation secretary had previously indicated he was holding back $40m from California for not enforcing linguistic standards for truck drivers.
Strong Response from the Governor's Office
"Ex-reality TV personality, now cabinet member, fails to grasp national statutes," Newsom's office retorted in a last month's statement responding to the secretary's comments. "In the meantime, unlike this clown, we rely on data: California commercial driver's license holders had a death rate significantly lower than the U.S. average. The state of Texas – the single state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate markedly elevated than California. Data speaks for itself. The federal leadership misleads."
Voter Sentiment and Political Future
A this month's survey revealed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and a significant portion of the electorate said that the governor ought to campaign for president in the next election cycle. After the current administration began, Newsom's favorability has increased to an mean of about one-third from around 30%, while his disapproval has fallen from an average of previous highs to 38.4%.
In previous months, the governor remarked while visiting several battleground states that he had "no idea" about his plans for 2028.
He mentioned his past difficulties, including being identified as dyslexic at the early childhood.
"The notion that a individual who got 960 on his SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was often seated at the back – the fact that this is even suggested is, alone, remarkable," he stated. "No one can say? I'm looking forward to who emerges in the next election and who answers the call. And that's the question for the American people."
