Bellingham Needs to Drop the Immature behavior to Secure a Key Role Under Manager Thomas Tuchel.

Should Bellingham wants to earn his place back into the English top team, the smart move to do away with the unnecessary reactions. The way he reacted when he saw that he was about to come up after an evening of uneven play in the match against Albania was not good enough.

"I don’t want to make more out of it but I hold to my words 'conduct is crucial' and respect for the squad members who enter the game," commented the coach. "Substitutions happen and you have to accept it being a professional."

Bellingham has to learn. It was unnecessary for an outburst. Kane had only moments earlier made it England two goals ahead in an inconsequential qualifier, with only six minutes remaining and the player, following an inconsistent display, was just shown a yellow for fouling Armando Broja. It was not a questionable change. Indeed it would have been foolish for the head coach to leave Bellingham on considering there was a chance the midfielder would make himself ineligible of the opening game of the tournament by receiving a second caution.

Drawing Attention Upon Himself

But Bellingham turned the spotlight on himself. No one could overlook the player's annoyance upon understanding that he would be substituted for Morgan Rogers. He threw his arms up and even though he accepted the coach's hand on his way to the bench it was clear that the manager was displeased.

This represents the hurdle that Bellingham must overcome. He praised his teammate for providing the assist for Kane to nod home his second goal, but the rest was self-defeating. It's not like complaining was going to change Tuchel’s mind. Tuchel has repeatedly emphasized respecting team hierarchies and the necessity of acting professionally.

In the Spotlight

Bellingham, left out of last month’s squad, has faced close inspection upon his return to the fold this month. Essentially his place has been in question and he hasn't helped his case through his behavior to being taken off as England completed a ideal group stage by seeing off a feisty challenge from Albania.

The System and the Setup

As a result opinions are divided on if the squad function at their best including Bellingham. The evidence here was not definitive. There was experimentation from the manager early on. He has given England a clear system lately, using a holding player, a No 8, a playmaker and specialist wingers, but the approach changed against Albania. Quansah was handed his international debut, Wharton started for the first time internationally and the role of the defender as a part-time midfielder gave a passing resemblance to Manchester City’s 2023 treble winners.

A Game of Two Halves

His performance was inconsistent. He made a chance for his teammate in the latter period but often looked too desperate to impress. He made many poorly executed passes. A pointless clash against an opponent at the beginning. England were ragged for much of the second half. A scoring chance for the opponents followed Bellingham gave the ball away. The yellow card was shown after he was dispossessed by Broja and fouled the attacker.

Squad Strength Shows

Ultimately the bench quality made the difference. Tuchel threw on the Manchester City player, who looked better suited to the role occupied by Bellingham earlier in the match, and Saka. In time Saka provided a corner kick for Harry Kane to break the deadlock. It highlighted that corners and free-kicks will play a key role next summer.

Connection Remains

However, the focus was on Bellingham. The quality of Rashford's cross for Kane's goal was a little lost amid the drama of the substitution incident. At the end, all eyes were on the midfielder. Tuchel came over to his side and guided the player towards the away supporters. Their connection is not broken. The coach isn't ready to give up on the player just yet. Yet whether he is willing to give him centre stage remains in doubt.
